More than 450 photos and 125 recollections from Rose Bowl players and coaches have been assembled in this volume to explore the last 50 years of the Rose Bowl Game and its matchless tradition.
Featuring a foreword by renowned ABC Sports announcer Keith Jackson, "Road to the Rose Bowl" provides rare insights into legendary Rose Bowl match-ups and the cherished bonds shared by all who participate in "The Granddaddy of Them All".
Archival information and photos selected from the past 50 years of the Lawry's Beef Bowl, college football's most enduring pre-bowl game tradition, provide a unique perspective to the players' and coaches' Rose Bowl experience away from their typical element of helmets, pads and practice fields.
Conceived in 1956, the Beef Bowl treats Rose Bowl Game competitors to dinner in our Beverly Hills restaurant before they match up on the field. Our annual tradition has become the best-known and biggest non-athletic tradition of the college football season, intensively covered by the press,
distinguished by the Tournament of Roses as one of only two pre-game events it officially endorses, and viewed by the teams as a rite of passage almost as eagerly anticipated as the big game itself. Rose Bowl officials call their association with Lawry's the longest tie between a bowl and a corporation.
Lawry's Dallas Beef Bowl was hosted in 1983, proudly bringing the tradition to the Cotton Bowl Classic teams and fans.
